Withdrawal Management Services are provided as part of a continuum of five Withdrawal Management levels in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria when determined medically necessary by a Medical Director or Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA), and in accordance with an individualized client plan. 

Medically necessary habilitative and rehabilitative services are provided in accordance with the individualized treatment plan prescribed by a licensed physician or licensed prescriber, and approved and authorized according to the state of California requirements. Each beneficiary shall reside at the facility if receiving a residential service and will be monitored during the detoxification process.

Physician Consultation:

Physician consultation services may address medication selection, dosing, side effect management, adherence, drug-drug interactions, or level of care considerations and provide insight to individualized treatment planning.

Withdrawal Management Level 1:

Currently Champions Outpatient Services have implemented withdrawal management (WM) level 1 of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria.   WM 1 a client with a mild withdrawal can come in daily or less than daily with outpatient supervision.  There are several components to WM 1, which include the following:

• Medication or non-medication methods of withdrawal management;

• An addiction focused history obtained as part of initial assessment and reviewed by physician during admission process;

• A physical exam shall be recommended as part of the initial assessment along with the prescription or administration related to SUD treatment services, and/or the assessment of the side effects and results of that medication.

• Sufficient bio-psychosocial screening assessment to determine LOC;

• An individualized treatment plan addressing ASAM dimensions 2 through 6;

• A daily assessment of progress (or less frequent based on severity of withdrawal);

• Transfer or discharge planning beginning at point of admission; and

• Referral and linking arrangements for counseling, medical, psychiatric and continuing care.

Withdrawal Management Level 2:

At this level, the client would have moderate withdrawal symptoms and still come into outpatient daily for supervision.  At this level client would have a strong support system and live with family for night supervision.  All components of WM 1 are included in WM 2.

The difference between mild and moderate withdrawal will depend upon many factors—size, age, gender, habits, genetics and the drug choice.  Listed below are some examples between mild, moderate and severe withdrawal symptoms.

• Fever

• Seizures

• Sever Confusion

• Agitation

• Loss of bowels
